Changing weather and keeping currency

Unread post by Turbonator »

I've been flying since 2011, and still love the sport of free flight, but nowadays weather seem to deal us a bad hand.

Comparing flyable days of say 5 years ago, the ones we got recently it seems to be of the lesser side. With paragliding one has a very narrow bad of flyable conditions compared to formal motorized flight. We have absolute legends (like Leon Viljoen) that used to many XC flights each season, only to find them self being able to do a hand full per season.

My insights to weather is limited, but my personal observation is that it has become somewhat erratic; either too soft or too strong to launch in a matter of minutes. Maybe it's the 'bold pilot- old pilot' thing kicking in, with me falling in the latter category, or El Nino playing a hand. Whatever it is, I hope it goes away soon as I really need more air time!

Climate change ruined it for everyone, then you actually find those arrogant enough to try and pretend it does not exist. The weather was more stable in the past than it is today.
