This is very interesting. I never thought the E190/195 would be a great freighter given that the trip cost is not going to be that far off a B737 or A320 converted freighter but the volume will be much smaller.

That said, there are a lot of B733 and B734 freighters that will be needing replacement over the coming years and the B738 conversion program is certainly limited. We're seeing the A320 and A321 conversion programmes picking up steam as a result. I guess that availability might be a determining factor. It simply might be quicker and easier for airlines to convert existing owned E190/195s than B738s.

Can these E-jets take any form of ULD? - or does everything have to be heaped on a pallet?

The E-Jet conversions are being designed to accommodate the same pallets that are used in bigger aircraft. The E190F will swallow six large ULDs, one half ULD and one LD3. The E195F accommodates the same, but has space for one more large ULD.
