SQ478 FAOR 14th

Unread post by moosp »

So here we are our on the airfield on a taxiway and stopped for half an hour. Then the captain tells us that ATC has told them to shut down the engines. So he did.

All a bit of a mystery, is CPT, our destination open?

The plot thickens. They are sending buses we all have to get off in the middle of the taxiway, for security reasons.

Yep full security check, dogs and police/swat everywhere. We went down the steps around 10.00 and after a search by the dogs and hand sweep we are in the buses now.

Glad the SA swat teams won all those medals last week! I know they are good!

Seems like an unclaimed hand carry bag left on the aircraft.

Pax still in the buses 1000m away.

Pax back on the aircraft, engines starting we are on our way.

SAPS and airport security all professional and polite. Thanks to the fire station which allowed us to use their bathrooms!

Well it is a bit like a rugby match report that you were at and the journalist wasn’t. They got the idea but not the details.

They may have got a tip off, but what we as pax saw was two successive and individual incidents of unidentified carry on baggage.

The first left on by a JNB destination pax on the transit, the second left on by a pax when we were all told to disembark and take all our hand baggage with us. He left some of his in a hat rack not adjacent to his seat and that added another hour and a half.

Not easy this airline business…

I wonder how often this happens with passengers disembarking at an intermediate stop? I would think fairly frequently, give how often stuff gets left behind.

I’ve observed that transit security staff do their best to tell everyone to go back to their seat and then ask you individually “is this your bag in the hatrack”. For some of the Asian pax on these sectors English is their third language or a grade 1 on the pilot scale. So many just smile and nod anyway.

The guy who left his bags on the aircraft when we all had to get off with our hand baggage so the aircraft could be searched was something else. After the bomb squad removed his bags from the aeroplane and the dogs
had given a negative “Lab”(rador) report for explosives he calmly picked his bags up and walked back into the aeroplane. Not a word of apology or contrition.

The Chief Purser was remarkably restrained under the circumstances and said polite things like “this is not good, you have delayed the aircraft”. (I was two seats away and heard it). Some passengers were ropeable, who had missed meetings and even cruises.

As I said above, running an airline when passengers who don’t give 2 cents about their effect on others is not easy.
