....just another proof of show how these clowns heads work - because we are unhappy, let's make the world an unhappy place for as most of the rest of the world as we could. BUT just wait and see when they need help - then they can and will open even the Red sea to get what they want - tsk tsk tsk

But why turn and fly all the way back to Johannesburg? Surely just fly around the closed airspace :?

....maybe weather did not play along, and the planning did not include the diversion leg wrt fuel?

oh wow, but you would think BA's planning department could quickly route them around, even to stop and refuel in Marrakech or something. That is a lot of closed airspaces now..

There are no airports which can handle an A380 between Barcelona and JNB .
Obviously in an emergency one would land .

That was my thinking too. But I'm surprised that the 777 from MRU turned back and did not refuel in Lagos like the CPT-LHR flight did I believe.

Many airports can handle the A380 in an emergency, but they don't have ground handling equipment that is easily capable. ABJ is one that could have handled the A380s, but they were already low on fuel.

Fuel was a first come, first serve basis. There were reports that LOS, ACC and ABJ got quite low on fuel and preferred to prioritise scheduled flights over diversions for fuel (which seems reasonable). They simply couldn't take everyone. Also, BA likely didn't want to divert to an airfield which they didn't already have ground handling in place.
