So unnecessary, more than one video shows lights flashing on the tower.......

From a YT channel, think it was a prelim report, at that height the lower light probably blended in with city lights and pilot was possibly looking down at her iPad during communication with ATC (when the accident happened)

If you are going to be flying around at night how would you not know where these towers are .

Had they had a system installed called " Power Flarm " the offending tower would have been in its data base .
It would have appeared on the " Flarm screen " up to 2 miles before the encounter and would have given them a course correction to avoid it.

The reason she was looking at her iPad was to see the ADSB position of conflicting traffic ATC had warned her about !. The Flarm obstacle database is an example of a good idea namely that obstacles & cables should be in a national database that can be synced with one click, but importantly the correct place to keep the warning system is, as in flarm - with the software that does the TCAS alerts.

RIP to the pilot and victims.

On towers/obstacles..

-surely with today's advanced tech in lighting, including LV LEDs, fibre optics, lens tech and miniaturisation, etc., the required minimum lighting should be reviewed and updated by the aviation authorities?

One could probably quite feasibly light up these obstacles up like veritable blinking Christmas Trees - and using mirror and lens tech to give focused and directional lighting to avoid light pollution etc..

What about doing your homework on minimum safe altitude before the flight and sticking to it. Below 600'at night with pax is, well, the result speaks for itself. Predictable and avoidable.

How come ATC were unable to advise on their fatal track to the tower . The tower would be on the ATC s screen ?

Would it?

I don't know much about the US systems, but surely a TRACON controller would only have/need the MVAs for each sector?

I'm more familiar with the UK's systems, which show the outlines from the SMA chart (eg https://www.aurora.nats.co.uk/htmlAIP/ ... 373955.pdf). They'll then have the Control Zone/Area chart (which has has obstacles etc) above the radar console. (source: YT videos of the EGCC and EGGP radar rooms).

Maybe the systems have these obstacles built in, but I don't think it's a "given".
