Why did the gear fail?

The wheel seems to still be attached to part of the leg, so more likely that the gear leg broke off? Probably reached the limit of flexes it could take, or it might have developed a minute fracture or crack which spread, over time.

From a witness, they saw the landing gear break. Apparently happened in the Sundays River Valley yesterday morning.

When researching this aeroplane using its registration letters ZS-LUG it comes up as a Cessna 210.

ZS-LUG registered as a PA-36-285 in September 2022 (ex N550TP).

“We” do not call just any bolt a lug nut!
A lug nut is a fastener that secures a wheel to a vehicle's axle by screwing onto the wheel's hub and threaded wheel studs.
Also, it was a play on words….ZS-LUG. I bet the drivers who flew her called her lug nut! 😂
