Re: Don't forget the towbar
The aircraft I fly for work specifically states " it is good practise to perform a "last chance check" by having a crewmember complete a quick look around the airplane to ensure all service are latched, hoses and cables removed and the airplane is safe for flight"
It's now just ingrained habit.

Damn fortunate that it didn't bounce up into the prop during taxi or takeoff. Either way he was in for new blades and a gearbox overall because of this oversight.

How the hell did he not feel that on the rudder pedals when taxiing and during the takeoff roll??? Bizarre.

Interesting as to why the Nose strut failed on the final landing. Perhaps a bit more cost than the prop and engine.Ugly Duckling wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 4:08 pm Damn fortunate that it didn't bounce up into the prop during taxi or takeoff. Re: Don't forget the towbar
From his flight path it would appear that he stooges around because he couldn't get the nose gear up. Has a touch and go and then lands with prop in the tarmac.

Re: Don't forget the towbar
I vaguely recall a similar situation at Lanseria quite some time ago. Maybe 2 to 5 years ago. It could have been a PC12, but for some reason I think it was a turboprop Piper.

Re: Don't forget the towbar
This happened to me at Kitty Hawk with my RV10. I did the pre flight checks outside the hanger and the clouds were still low. I then decided to go and have a coffee to burn some time. I returned to the aircraft and got into the plane not noticing the towbar is still attached. Taxi to 01 without any noticing or feeling anything. As I did my run ups a guy speed towards me on the taxiway hooting. Luckily he saw me as this was during the week in the morning.

Re: Don't forget the towbar
I like and endorse the comment to switch off the damn mobile phone on the way to the tarmac - that's the first step to thorough pre-flight checks....

Re: Don't forget the towbar
This happened to me at Hoedspruit. Fortunately, I did not switch on the noise cancelling on my headset and heard this scraping noise as I taxied out. At the holding point, the penny dropped, and I shut down and removed it. As Jim said before: "don't be in a hurry around aircraft".
The sky is not the limit....

Perhaps he discovered the problem when when he tried to retract the undercarriage and then he couldn't get the nose wheel to lock down?JCA wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 6:33 pmInteresting as to why the Nose strut failed on the final landing. Re: Don't forget the towbar
A General Message about Tow bars. NEVER leave a towbar attached to your aeroplane. Leaving it on becomes a nasty and expensive habit especially when the aeroplane is put away in it's hangar. It WILL get forgotten about! When you have parked the aerie, take the tow bar OFF! When you have parked on the hardstanding, take tow bar OFF! The shout always is "it will waste my time having to keep taking it off and putting it on again". Not as bad a waste of time of having to fill in Incident and insurance forms and justify the expense of deductibles and AMO inspections.

Re: Don't forget the towbar
It doesn't look like the Tow can swivel freely centered on the wheel axle. In the first part of the video it shows the bar inclined forward. In the latter part of the video, as he approaches to land, it is trailing. So a bit confusing.Morph wrote: Fri Jan 24, 2025 2:14 pmPerhaps he discovered the problem when when he tried to retract the undercarriage and then he couldn't get the nose wheel to lock down?JCA wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 6:33 pmInteresting as to why the Nose strut failed on the final landing. Re: Don't forget the towbar
This Bonanza tried the towbar trick at Rand in Dec 2007.
It did not work out well for the propeller
