Agreed. If you fly (or intend to} fly IFR, having both vacuum and electric systems is essential. Vacuum pumps repairs and older vacuum driven instruments are much cheaper than modern instruments.

It looks like the vacuum pump will have to be replaced +/- $ 600 ex USA ; the engine it is fitted to is a Lycoming O-235 of 115 HP

You used to be able to buy a overhaul kit which consisted of amongst the gaskets and seals the carbon vanes that wear out

A search of the internet could not find a supplier of the overhaul kit - Can anybody direct me to a supplier or does anyone have a kit gathering dust that they would like to sell

He would like to chuck out the old steam gauges along with the vacuum pump, regulator and hoses and replace them with a modern EFIS from MGL or Dynon ; also his JPI engine monitor has started dropping some digits and a modern EFIS would sort out that problem as well

Is there any way to do this if the aircraft is only for private VFR use
Referring to only VFR. I might be wrong, but I think you can mark the AH as non-Op and still fly VFR as it is not required. Not sure if you can just remove the vacuum pump? Probably need a mod approval? Any AMO's on here that can give info?

Dynon's D3 Pocket panel looks like a good option for a "portable" solution. The Level BOM can also wrok

Thanks for all the good advice / suggestions

A vacuum pump has been sourced locally so hopefully that will sort out the problem
