Samora Machel Crash Documentary on SABC 3 at 21:30 Tonight
Tonight - Tuesday - on Special Assignment on SABC 3 at 21:30 there will be a documentary on the Samora Machel TU-134 crash that occurred on October 19, 1986. The journalist is apparently going to prove that the aircraft was lured into South Africa by a decoy. I'm going to record it.
I have dug deep into my archives and found some photos of the crash. Sorry if they are a bit large, but I don't feel like resizing them now that they are already uploaded to my Photobucket album.

What Special Assignment will fail to point out, no doubt, is that beacons don't make aeroplanes stop flying. Groundpounders don't seem to be able to grasp a basic fact, namely that beacons don't have cables attached to the aircraft which they then reel in like a big fat game fish. Beacons are not giant magnets that suck aeroplanes out of the sky.
Bad pilots, on the other hand, can fly an aircraft into the ground in a hearbeat . If Special Assignment has the CVR transcript, perhaps they will mention the discussion between the FO, the FE and the Captain about the glowing lights (Maputo) off to the left of the aircraft which would have been occasion for any pilot with even a rudimentary fear of CFIT to halt the descent.
But I doubt it.

Ja, appoint another commission (taxpayers money) and search for the truth you want to hear...
It will bring them back more than 20 years later - or at least their spirits will come to rest (like the forefathers) and then we can all go home and drink the rest of the spirits...
Funny how Hans Louw only makes his statement now (on TV), why not during the truth and reconciliation commission? Tell them what they want to hear, that's it!

Hard to beleive that Hans Louw was a highly trained killer. He comes across as a drunk bergie , who is down on his luck.
We all know that the apartheid govt. killed machel. Its 20 years ago , forget about it , its not gonna make a difference. Anyways Nelson is making up for it by marrying and taking care of Graca

What a load of hogwash... the documentary was.
Nobody tells you what the settings on the cockpit VOR, the switch settings and the position selections were...
Nobody tells you that ALL the documents were still at the scene of the accident...
Nobody tells you that the wheels were still selected UP...
Nobody tells you that the GPWS sounded for 29 seconds before impact... with NO control input.
Nobody tells you that the Board actually adresses the issue of the South African military people in the vicinity...
Somebody must ask Hans how he saw the aircraft...
Indeed - nobody refers to any of the technical information in the Board of Inquiry document that is in the public domain, as well as the findings that were signed off by a number of international aviation specialists - including Frank Bornman.

Re: Samora Machel Crash Documentary on SABC 3 at 21:30 Tonight
Ja well, no fine - watched the doccie (that's a laugh - documentaries are supposed to be factual!) on SABC3 just now - never seen so much unsubstantiated bulldust in my life!
They treat this accident as if the pilots were robots, flying on beacons only and incapable of making real-time decisions! But then any thinking person (not the majority in SA) would expect this from "His Master's Voice" the SABC,when the ANC (His Master) are trying to divert attention from their own appalling behaviours of recent times and failures ad nauseam over the past 14 years!
Quite honestly I cannot believe the statement of the main "witness', on the programme - that he attended a briefing at which he was told that the obective was to kill Samora Machel - this witness was of lowly rank in the so-called "Special Forces" as he termed his unit. I would have thought that anyone in such a unit as existed in the SADF in that era would probably and more naturally use the term "recces" when describing the unit - or am I wrong on this point? In my thinking the term 'Special Forces" is one which has come into common useage from US made movies and TV only since the Vietnam Conflict, and not before - before which time no such term was in common use - and certainly not in SA!
In addition since when would the lowly operative be told the name of the target in such a sensitive operation - pulease?
Moreover the Commission of Enquiry headed by Justice Cecil B Margo and which included high-level international representation of the highest calibre (US astronaut and aeronautical engineer Frank Borman, Geoffrey Wilkinson, former head of the British Department for Transport’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch and Sir Edward Eveleigh, former chief justice of the British court of appeal) found no evidence of any such actions and concluded that the acident was as a result of pilot error - a pretty common occurrence in Africa then and since,as we have seen from all the accidents involving Russian equipment and pilots.
Descending at night in less than perfect weather, where the usual visual clues do not appear (like the city of Maputo for instance - population 1.3 million - gotta be some lights eh?) as expected, would the pilots not have then acted differently - say for instance decided to pull up to a minimum safe altitude or simply obeyed the controllers instruction to remain above 3000ft?
The documentary tells the story as if they simply kept their descent going (below the level designated in their clearance) as if everything was hunky dory - until being lured off course by a false beacon (VOR?), they hit the hill near Komatipoort! The notion of a false beacon seems an unlikely tale to me, but not of course unlikely if you want to blacken the name of the white folks in SA to divert attention from what the black folks have been doing and not doing!

From Wikipedia:
This whole accusation is a farce for politcial ends - the airie was an antiquated piece of Russian crap, and which Russian pilots get dumped in in Africa to fly a communist dictator around for a job - the hotshots? I think not!Twelve years after the crash, when the apartheid regime had been replaced by a democratically-elected South African government, a special investigation into Machel's death was carried out in 2001 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
The TRC investigation was criticized for taking place in camera and without any aviation specialist being present. The testimony was further led by a prominent radio journalist rather than a judge.
The TRC's investigation did not find conclusive evidence to support either of the earlier reports. Nonetheless, some pieces of circumstantial evidence collected by the TRC lead to questions being raised about a number of the Margo Commission's findings:
