Dream Machine
It might not be perfect, but the experience is perfect.

The only problem from what I gather with the Flamingo is the Price-Bracket.
How does the flying-experience compare with the Samba for instance?

Hi
Well the price is and I agree a little steep BUT then you get what you pay for... It does not compare to the samba its a whole different animal.
Well when you get in for a start everyting feels much more "solid" seats is comfy and big, then you look at the pannel ZU-FLA is very well equiped and everyting is in great working order. So already (if you havent got it from the outside) you get the feeling of quality. While sitting you also get the sensation of speed... like sitting in a sports car low to the ground.Closing the cannopy you realize just how big the cockpit really is, (I think even lardbeast will fit). Then start, taxi and lineup is exactly the same only differance is the prop. This one got a electronic CSU, so you basically set the prop and forget about it you just monitor it for the overspeed as the CSU is sometimes a little behind but nothing to worry about.
Then on the take off roll it accelerates a bit slower than the normal samba(its a bit heavyier), then getting to 40-45 kts apply back pressure and she will soon lift off. This is now where things start speeding up.Once no more usable runway, brakes apply, gear- up and keep the nose up not to exceed the flap operating speed range, once gear is in and you are at an weird nose high angle you select flaps up and continue the climb.Like the samba she climbs really quick. Once at your cruising level nicely set up for the cruise and trimmed out,she fly's like she is on silk, controlles is very well harmonized, but very sensitve so you only make small movements (basically just think about going in a direction and she is already there). Then doing turns, steep turns, anything is really easy, while doing the steep turn you actually reduce power otherwise you will speed up in your turn this is at 80 deg bank in the turn. Slowing things down (takes a long time unless you convert speed to altitude). At 70kts she still has excelent flying cateristics obviously less sensitive but still good enough controll to keep you out of trouble and it feels like you have a million hp to pull you out if anything funny starts. The stall is dosile also like the samba just mushes around and just a littel application of power will get you back flying or even just the normal stall recovery methods.Dont keep het stalled for too long thoug as she will drop a wing...
Then returning to the circuit things start happening quick again if you dont plan correctly. You must start slowing down way before you get to the circuit otherwise youll still be doing 110kts on the downwind with the throttle closed. Once she has slowed down flaps and gear comes down. Now because she has split flaps and the gear down she is very draggy and youll find you actually land with power on.You only use 30 deg flaps that will ensure you'll always land on the main gear.It is the easyist VLA I have ever landed because of that its great.
All I can say is it is really a nice aircraft and if you are interrested come and fly it you'll love it,FLA is being redone and as I understand will be flying again soon. I'll be back in SA around the 5th of March and is willing to take anyone for a flip... just let me know so we could arrange.....

I think this particular photo communicates the characteristic of what it looks like and what impression it createsin real life very well to someone if they are not familiar with it. Good one!

I enjoyed reading that.
What criticism do pilots have of the Flamingo, can you spin her, is she easy to recover?
The Samba is awesome, but you stay away from spinning. Pitty.
Sometimes I am tempted to go for something that can be spinned without worries - but informed people tell me I will be disappointed.
I assume she is not acrobaticall?
Those wings look very very strong.

Re: Dream Machine
Hey im glad someone did.
Well unfortunately it is not aerobatic I wish it was
Spinnig is something you stay away from as the rudder is very small and she will take a long time to recover... But I have had her in a steep turn at too low a speed where she dropped a wing and by acting quickly she recovered very soon no problems.
Hope this help...

Re: Dream Machine
What is the average cost (per hour) for instruction on the Flamingo? Can one use an NPL to fly her?
