Ask George

Unread post by gielo »

Hi Almal,

was at the airport yesterday and popped into factory for some coffee and a chat.Three items on my agenda:
Firstly,Len agreed to answer any questions directed to him or the factory on this forum,so it will be similar to the CAA thread. This topic for it is my suggestion, but i am open to suggestions for another topic name. There are currently no moderators to this specific forum,so obviously if we want the factory's co-operation all questions should obviously be fair and not derogatory to anybody.Lets hope it works positively for the benefit of 'us' and 'them' so we can all have safer planes in the end and 'Jabiru' will benefit.
Secondly, Les and the staff are busy compiling a computer list of all Jabiru owners with contact details from all the files in the office.Karen is about halfway through them and as soon as she has completed it [ a couple of weeks] the list will be available to us.
Thirdly, Len has undertaken to attend the planned annual gathering and he will obviously sponsor one of the prizes, who knows, maybe it will be a new 120 =D> =D> =D> =D>
Groete aan almal, and safe flying,Giel.

Well done "GEORGE". It does take some guts from a company to agree to this. It just goes to show the commitment of Len and the rest. Till now they have only been excellent in their service support to my endless queries. I am Karin's eternal headache.......and she handles it so well.
So let's give them the support they deserve, and keep it a positive forum. This can be easily spoilt by one wrong posting, so let's not spoil it for everyone. We all can only learn from it.

Perhaps gielo can "scan" the postings before Len reads it; if you have the time?

I'm sure Len needs no protection.

Excellent topic title.

HI everyone, i will be glad to help any info is valuable and the experience gained should improve safety and the product. In discussing the a/c, eng no's and reg is important to follow up on aircraft file. There is close on 250 planes inS.A. and it is difficult to remember each one.
Cheers

Hi Len, Les and Jean

This is great and I am glad the forum now has an official streak to it, getting it going has been a mission but we seem to be well underway and it has been a positive thread in most cases.

I will forward the detail that I have managed to scrounge up to add to the list of owners.

Cheers

 Forgive me for projecting my personal issues onto Len. It's just that I have a personal issue with unfair criticism.
Thanks Len for coming onboard. Highly appreciated.

OK, first question to "George":

Dear George

Case in point: The fuel reservoir under the seat of my J430:

How is the fuel level maintained in this reservoir?
Sure, fuel is fed by gravity from the wing tanks:
But, say we start with the reservoir being empty and we open the fuel selectors on the wing tanks as well as the central fuel valve. The vapour/air in the reservoir must now go somewhere in order for it to be replaced by fuel.

How does the vapour vent and what prevents the fuel in the reservoir from overflowing?

Kind regards

Wynand Uys

Hi Wynand
The bottom collector tank is vented via a t piece into the main vent tube connecting the two main fuel tanks.

Thanks Len for info on this forum. My question went unanswered by my jabbie-mates in this forum. ZU-DNO serial 185. When checking carb heat, on static run at 1600, 1800 and 2000 RMP, the revs do not drop at all when applying carb heat. I am sure it did 100 hours ago, but lately it does not. I do not see the needle move even if I put my glasses on (which i seldom do!). There is a definite drop in rev's/power when applying carb heat in flight, when revs are 2300 or more. Do I need to inspect it, or just forget about it?

Hi Henk,
this is normal you will hardly notice a drop in revs static when carb heat is applied, sometimes on a cold day you might get a more noticable rpm drop.

Hallo Henk, some further notes regarding your questions. The collector tank is a closed sealed unit with only the out/inlets [4] fitted. So as long as there is fuel at the tank outlets and the taps are open in will always be full and the fuel will rise in the vent pipe up to the fuel level in the tanks. It then vents via the t-piece connection with the 2 tanks to a vent outlet which is higher than the tank,so it can never overflow. So in theory,[if im correct Len?] one can guage via your collector tank vent pipe whether there is fuel in the collector tank. Also when closing the wing tank taps with the engine running the the fuel level in the vent pipe will drop until air is vented into the collector tank as it is emptying.
The electric pump is also next to the tank in the line to the engine so there can be no vapour lock between the collector tank and the engine pump on the engine.
My engine rev drop with carb heat is also barely noticeable on the ground on the analog rev counter but the digital [efis] is much more sensitive and a drop is always noticed there.
Regards,Giel
