Both radios that you mentioned have VERY owners.

Either very happy
or
very unhappy ...

My spare Garmin SL40 is with Biggles in Pta. Arrange a tech (Theo?) to do a test installation for you, use the Jabbie antenna in the tail.

I get 100nm mile range with mine, best aviation radio I have EVER had in a plane 8)

Got you Ben.

Shame that it is no longer available. Both the SL30 and SL40 got superseded accordingly to Century Avionics. Is this true? I am with you, I enjoy my SL40.

Noël, you have my number, we need to get together for your fuel bladders anyway!

Since we seem to be on the subject of radios, I have two problems with my ICOM A200...maybe someone has seen something similar:
1) I've got the opposite problem from that mentioned in the earlier post. At certain spots on the ground, my reception is 5/5, but transmission is sometimes 1-2. At other spots its 5/5 for tx and Rx. Almost always 4/5 or 5/5 once airborne. Problem is that at FABB and FAGC the 'certain spots' are exactly where I need to make the critical transmission before entering the active runway! The odd thing is that it never used to be a problem and is intermittent (i.e its not just that I did not notice it before...I have had some clear conversations at the same spots before). Anyone got any ideas of what could be causing this?

2) When flying with a mate who has the Garmin SL30, his range is far, far greater than mine...flying over Moz I had to rely on him to relay many of my coms to ATC when over the more remote areas (he also got out of range in places, but long after me). In several areas of SA (e.g. between CT boundary and Cradock when flying to the coast), I have no contact with ATC. Is the ICOM a less powerful radio, or is this a fixable problem?

Help appreciated

Be careful of simply comparing radios it is also the environment in which it is used and installed that affects perceived performance.
I have found that some EFIS screen generate annoying levels of radio interference. Also it may well be that the Jab alternator arrangement creates a lot of electrical noise. Your very same radio installation might do considerably better in less noisy aeroplane.

I see in one of the latest Jabiru ads in sa flyer the plane appears to have a different (new?) cowling. Can anyone confirm? Perhaps post a better pic.

I asked Les and she told me that it is just the angle of the pic. No changes.

Would anybody know the size of the inlet on the Bing carburettor? In other words the size of the scat tube that clamps onto the carb from the air filter. I need to find a pancake filter that fits onto it so I can run the engine without the scat tube to test if my egt problem originates there.

Leon I would not do that, no carb heat then. Down at the coast too risky!

I'm not planning on getting airborne. This is peruant to an in depth conversation with Len about my installation problem.

Fail to see the relevance, bolt off bolt on scenario but .......

Ok then Leon. I'll measure it for you early tomorrow morning. Working on my carb at the moment. You have my number.

Tuning problem, yes that is a different story!

I have one EGT misbehaving. Got it a little better by tilting the carb fractions of a degree at a time TOWARDS the hot one. Now I'm going a little richer on mix and the tuning starts all over again. Once something change on your setup one needs to fine tune again. This can only be done by trial and error looking at how EGT temp behave to the changes made. I got mine spot-on in the past. Unfortunately I had to remove the carb to replace the rubber mount and now my temp is a mess again.

Luckily I like flying a lot so I do not mind the trial and error tuning! =P~

Have you ever fit the needle and jet kit (econ kit) I have sent you. If you have what was the effect with the new setup? Was there a difference between the new kit and what was in the carb (Needle and jet set sizes)?

Abrie also just went through a very extensive carb tuning exercise and passed with flying color, so it can be done! Stick in there, you will get it sorted. =D>
