Len will give you a more technical answer, but even when the carb heat is pulled the air is filtered so as to prevent dirt and dust entering the engine.

Gerrit, Burner is correct.

Other than on your usual Cessna / Piper / Mooney / etc setup, the hot air on the Jabi is FULLY filtered, and you may do so without fear.

That is also the reason why you may control your mixtures with the carb heat for prolonged periods of time with no risk of contaminating the engine

Now on my Cessna and Piper, I would NEVER check carb heat on a dirt runway, as the air is unfiltered.

hi zuluben
not always true. The earlier versions of filters do not filter the carb heat air duct. j400 etc. The reason has been to ensure you can fly with a blocked air filter by pulling the carb heat as a secondary air source. If you remove the filter cover you get a good idea if your system filters the carb heat air or not. In any event check the carb heat on gravel while taxiing if possible or on the preflight with the engine top cover off. You can feel if the spring loaded valve locks open.

cheers peter

Thanks Peter!

Did not know that the earlier systems were different

I personally check the operation before start, you can feel the cam "pull over" and hear the mechanism operate.

Len, you have to tell the story of the Jabi that you dragged out of the ocean after it has spend many hours floating and the restoration of that. That story is too good NOT to be part of the Jabi folklore!!

Minor matter - I had DNO at Legair for a service and minor cosmetic repairs, just before the Gariep fly-inn. They did a sterling job, =D> but I would like some advice form you Len. I had the flaps resprayed, since there were some seriosly deep "chafing" marks at the leading edges of both flaps, obviously from some dirt/stones/debris caught between the flap and the wing. The marks were app 4 - 5 cm in length , 1 - 2 mm wide, at 4 areas on each flap; and were through the paint and app 1 - 2 mm into the fibreglass. Unfortunately no pics of it.
I bought the plane like that, and checked that there was no debris in there, but it still bothered me, I could see it with each pre-flight, so had it repaired.
Since then, the plane has a marked vibration with full flaps. 1 Notch of flaps cause a minor vibration, full flaps more serious, but not that it affects performance. It's just a vibration which were not there previously. Also a "wrrrrr" noise which appears when extending flaps. No vibration, no noise with no flaps.

I wanted to get advice from Chris at Gariep, but unfortunately missed him. Is there something I can check myself?

As I understand it, the wings are not imported, but manufactured by the factory-
My leading edges on flaps-- same problem. I did not have it repaired. I'd love
to hear Len's comments as well.

Hi Henk
the flap viabration occured after repairs ? then I suspect that the bushings between the flap bolt and the hinge arm were not put back. these bushings are small. They are made up of 1/4 bundy tube 7mm long.Check this first. If the marks are there sand under the trailing edg of the wing and check the clearance with a piece of paper.

Affirm Len, it occurred only after prepairs. Will check as you suggest and give feedback in about 2 weeks, once I got to the plane.
Thanks a lot, appreciate your advice.

Gee, if he hadn't made a draai over the Indian ocean he would've made it.
Excuse my flippancy.

But seriously wow, what is the endurance of one of those aeries?
