We are pleased to announce that the Jabiru 2200 85hp engine is now a viable replacement for those old two stroke motors. Test data so far.Conditions - 27 degr
Elevation - 540 ft
QNH - 1020
Take off roll solo with half tanks 82 kg pilot - 75m
Take off dual half tanks with 82kg pilot and 115kg pax - 100-120m(not absolutely sure)
Landing - under 100m solo dual about 130 without using brakes.
Best rate of climb 70mph - solo 1000ft/min
- dual 600ft/min
Best angle of climb is about 60mph
Best glide 60-65mph
Full throttle 3150 rpm = 120mph IAS
2900 rpm - 100mph
2700rpm - 95 mph
2550- 85mph
2500 - 80 mph
She is happiest between 90 and 100mph but best fuel consumption will be at approx 85mph. We are not 100% sure about the fuel consumption yet but it's less than 12liter/hr.

In a hurry to see it all painted.
Would it be more beautiful if the exhaust was cut shorter ?
What's its empty weight ?

I have replied to MYR via mail but to answer some of the questions. The cowl is not painted yet because this cowl will not be the final cowl of this plane, it is only the development cowl and we keep on changing it to get the optimum in cooling and performance.

This Jabiru combination has made flying affordable agian. With the strength of the rand a fly away Jabi 2200 Explorer with panel mount radio and headsets will cost in the region of R350 000 plus VAT.

Hi everybody

Firstly, to Stefan and Rick, the developmental work being done on the Bushbaby is brilliant!! Affordability of real 3 axis flying is getting less and less, and with stories doing the rounds that Rotax might phase out the two strokes all together, THIS new option of the Jabiru engine is great news. =D> =D> :D

To all the other Avcommers, you can also follow the test flying progress on the following link on Microlighters: http://www.microlighters.co.za/viewtopi ... 29&t=10695

As soon as my Bushbaby is completed, expect me in the Bosveld to come and have a look at the new developments....

It would be very interesting to know the rate of climb of the Explorer at the same conditions when equipped with 65, 80, 95, 100 hp Rotax, with 1200 BMW, and with other engines.
Perhaps do you already have some answers ?

I hear there are several 2200 Jab engines available for around R60K second hand. Makes for some interesting numbers vs Rattex

Ranking the new prices of the engines (low to high) we have:
Jabiru 85hp
Rotax 65hp
BMW 1200
Jabiru 120hp
Rotax 80hp
Rotax 100hp

Admittedly, with a bit of luck, you may come in cheaper on the BMW - but it really is a matter of luck.

Now I am just waiting to see the 120hp Jabriu Explorers!

From a factory viewpoint, we have to supply a new engine and that changes your ranking a bit
Approx prices excl VAT
Rotax 65 - R72000 E- box and radiators
Jabiru 85 -R86000
Jabiru 120 - R 120 000
BMW 1200 new with reduction and electronics- R130 000
Etc etc

PS I have a 1200 with 4200 km on complete with throttle bodies, starter, alternator, headers and exhaust for R35 000 inc of VAT

Can't wait to see the performance you get with a Jabiru 3300. Judging what people in the states get with similar airframes, it will be a rocket! And cost a fraction of the Rotax to maintain ;-) .
