ZU CYB Project

Unread post by giarc64 »

Okay guys

As you all know we had a forced landing in CYB 4 weeks ago after departing FASK. Even though we pulled off a perfect LOB with no damage to personal and or plane, we were forced to remove the wings to get CYB out of the field and trailer her back to Tedderfield.

So we have decided to make CYB like new.

We plan on doing the following:

* New VW engine built be myself with some external assistence (Gogga and RV)
* New lexan windscreens
* Fix up material and new sprayjob
* New instrument panel
* New tyres and tubes
* Rewire instrument panel
* New fuel pipes
* And whatever else i feel needs done.

I am starting to get withdrawl symptoms, I havent flown for 4 weeks, but atleast I am doing some work on the cubby.

I started sanding the material and pulling off all the decals. I have purchased new components for the Volla and the crankcase is at the engineers getting align bored.

So I will keep you all informed. I am gonna make this the best cubby in SA. :D :D

Stripping old baby blue paint and polishing the case ready for the boiling hot bath in soap. I have got all my new parts. The only thing from the existing engine , will be the case and the crank. The rest will be new. I am also putting in a Bosch Electronic Disi with dual ignition units with a swap over switch.

Giving my crank cases a boiling hot bath. Old <<moderated - language>> paint all stripped and smoothed down. Next step is to take cases to get lined bored and make sure all components are clearanced. then all components go for dynamic balancing . Then they came back for another boiling hot bath and then the fun begins. (THE ASSEMBLY)

Indeed I am. Lost of fun redoing your own aerie. Looking forward to finishing her so that she is ready to fly early Jan 2010.

Went through to tedders to do some work on the cubbymeister. Got through a lot. Finished sanding one side of the fuselage and have started on the other side. Pulled the instrument panel out. Have labeleld all the wires. Pretty simple wiring setup but was done very badly by the cubby guys. Will neaten it up . Also making space for the electronic ignition modules.

will be making a new instrument panel to cater for CHT, EGT and fuel flow aswell as the usual stuff.

Good to see the progress, Craig! Would now not be a good time to consider EFIS like MGL or Dynon?

Hi Francois

I was going to change , but I only really need to add CHT. I already have a dual skydat EGT gauage. I have VDO instruments which are apparently very good. The only <<moderated - language>> instrument is the tachometer. So i will take out tacho and hobbs and get a combined skydat tacho and hobbs and add a skydat CHT guage . I dont want to wast on unecessary stuff. still need to get new tyres and tubes. also getting new reduction drive pulleys made.

By the way were all your deck heights very similar . If not then the crank is not running true and this will cause major wear. Taking my case for aline boring this week. Only reusing the crank,conrods and the case, the rest is new.

Craig

Just took your new Carbon panel out of the mould....looking good!

Now we just need to find a place that does waterjetting to make all the necessary cut outs.

Depending what Carbon weave you go for anything between R400-R800 per meter.

You will need to back the Carbon up with Glass twill weave....290g/Meter will set you back arount R70-R80 per meter. Obviously depending on the application this will determine the amount of layers.
Laminating Epoxy resin and hardener works out around R150 per kilo.

So for this panel which is 620 X 350mm works out at R238 which equates to R1096 per square meter with 4 layers glass.

1 Layer 0.2m 200g Carbon weave @R400pm = R80
4 layers totalling 1.6m 290g Glass twill weave @R80pm = R128
200g Resin and Hardener @ R150/kg = R30
