This propeller comes from a 360hp V-8 engine and was made by SENSENICH in the '60s. It was used for hundreds of hours in Botswana in the Okavango swamps for research, fun, gill net wrecking, exploration, anti-poaching, fishing and so forth. The boat travels, in 3-meter reed beds at close to 105 KPH, and on water at about 130 KPH. The propeller shown here was brought in for reproduction. The propeller needed extensive repairs, cracks filled and sanded to prepare it for a 3 dimension scan. The scanner gathers data points in an x, y and z-axis, so 3 dimensions. The scanning takes about 8 to 12 hours of very precise alignment steps to ensure that overlapping sections do not curl up or down but aligns perfectly. After the scanning procedure the file, which are tens of Megabytes large, is imported into a 3D CAD/CAM program for editing purpose. The scanner will pick up and record even the tiniest of hairline cracks or abnormalities. The CAD program is used to smooth out, adapt and edit the scanners results. This is done so that the file can be read by a CAM program and a cut file is generated ready to be interpreted by the motion controllers of the CNC router table.
