Well, if you get wet - you'll probably be OK. If those Odyssey's get a bath in the Ocean they will be dead. I think they know it !jpitman wrote: Thinking about it, our MGL Odysseys are probably the next bravest pilots on the trip!

Keep those things dry and in one piece.
Good luck

Re: Sling 4 Around the World
I have a question on the icing of the pitot tube.
If the pitot tube is iced and you decent to de-ice the parts, aren't there danger of water running into the pitot tubes and maybe damaging the Odyssey?

pitot tube have a small drainage hole at the back to drain the waterTHI wrote:I have a question on the icing of the pitot tube.

Re: Sling 4 Around the World
I'm not sure how the Odyssey is installed here, but there are 2 things to remember, Generally, a Pitot is a pressure sensor, so there is no airflow down the tube, all it does really is measure the pressure presented directly from the front of the plane, and compare it to the Static sensor (that measures pressure from a point that is not supposed to be influenced by the passage of the airframe through the air).THI wrote:I have a question on the icing of the pitot tube.

What I'm trying to say is that there is no "air flow" along these tubes. As the ice melts, the residual water may however reside near the openings, and with vibration and what have you, it may "dribble" along the tubes. In most Certified installations there is a drain point somewhere along the line in order to drain out any water for just this eventuality. Remember also that typical EFIS installations are not normally connected directly to the Pitot/Static tubes directly, those normally go to a thing called an ADC (Air Data Computer), where the information is digitised and then the electronic data is then sent to the EFIS itself.

Change of plans: James and Jean are doing a 24hour flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka, due to fuel problem in Maldives. They will depart at 4am (UTC +4) on 11 August. See our Latest News page for the latest update at http://www.airplanefactory.co.za/sling4atw_news.asp .

Further to the (correct) comments on this subject:THI wrote:I have a question on the icing of the pitot tube.

Water will not damage the pressure sensor of the Odyssey allthough it would not be a good thing as, once evaporated, all sorts of undesirable elements may be left behind (the water may have cleaned out your tubes and now all of that dust is in the sensor). This may effect the long term reliability of the system if too much of this gets in there. However, considering a normal installation, it is unlikely that water will in fact find its way into the sensor itself.
We have an estimated 15000-20000 pressure sensors in operation in our instruments (counting only instruments that have these things) at this point and failure of a pressure sensor, how so ever caused, is very rare indeed.
To comment on another post, the Odyssey does not use a seperate airdata computer - it's an "all in one" as far as this is concerned so the second Odyssey that our intrepid adventurers are using is a full function backup with its own sensors. Systems external to the actual "box" consist of AHRS (gyroscopic system for attitude determination), Magnetometer (for magnetic heading - compass) and RDAC (Remote Data Aquisition computer) which is just a fancy term for our little firewall forward engine monitoring subsystem. I believe they are also using an electronic circuit breaker system made by the U.S. company "Vertical Power" - essentially this replaces traditional circuit breakers and allows the EFIS to partake in the electrical system of the aircraft which is nice for fault finding and systems health monitoring (you can see the actual current flowing through each breaker - very nice !).

Bon anniversaire, monsieur! (To use Reunion-ese ) Actually, what lingo comes next in your big world itinerary, I wonder?
Keep your spirits up, chaps, and continue to avoid those big nasties -- TAF website seems to have had hits from all over the world and from the most unusual and unlikely places (Nepal! Laos! Imagine...) Profound thanks for the updates!
