Was wondering if any of the weekend formation teams have a standardised formation briefing template for every formation sortie.
Somehow I doubt it. Perhaps a lesson can be taken from the professional teams who do.

Standard Formation Briefing Templates
I was not always this sarcastic.
It took me years of dealing with A-holes to get this good at it...

Go to a formation school, get the correct training.
They will have them and show you how to use them

Ger .. going to a formation school would be the most dangerous thing I could do ... I am not a pilot and dont intend becoming one !Ger wrote:I think that might be dangerous.Bearcat wrote:Darrell,

You have me intrigued though, as I cant see how posting a template would be dangerous and I would prefer to see one that has been posted by Darrell or anyone else routinely involved in formation flying rather than Google one that may have errors or ....not be the latest thinking on the matter.
It would also be interesting if different countries handle things differently. I would imagine that the Brit display template would be very thorough, but I wonder about other countries

Re: Standard Formation Briefing Templates
Hi Bearcat,
The SAAF and RAF have very very similar SOP's
The USA slightly different.
The link above is for a Yak formation school in the UK. (A course started today) Very much like the one that was run in SA a few years back

Re: Standard Formation Briefing Templates
There is no template in the UK Yak link that I could find.
Googling around it seems that for civilian teams the T-34 Association manual is the standard....in the USA at least.
The Vans Airforce site also contains quite a bit of info.
I have not come across an SA civilian standard yet
What I have seen so far contains a lot of "how to" type stuff including the pre-briefing which aligns with what I have witnessed here when I have been at briefings prior to photo sorties (although none of the articles have mentioned a template)
Speaking to Darrell yesterday he mentioned that diversionary airfields was one of the items on the template ... which is an item I cant recall being mentioned in the briefings I have attended ... so I am just wondering what else is in the template

Re: Standard Formation Briefing Templates
Template as requested. Its exactly the same one as posted in the Skyministry link UD because it is run by Chris Hearns, pictured in the home page, who ran our Yak week.
Its ironic that UD is posting this link because not so long ago his mates at EAA vehemently rejected these very same SOP's that I was trying to formalise and use in conjunction with the theoretical course offered by his mate Jeff Earle

Yep, these ones are taken directly from the Hawk SOP's and re jigged for Yaks.Darrell Lush wrote:Template as requested. Its exactly the same one as posted in the Skyministry link UD because it is run by Chris Hearns, pictured in the home page, who ran our Yak week.

I remember the whole saga about the guys who were doing the "theory"only" course.
They were very unhappy about the Virginia course. Even with the course run by Current and ex RAF and SAAF fast jet guys, they claimed it was not valid or run correctly.
Indeed, I believe some from the theory only course got an award from one of the organisations? That did make me laugh.
As anyone who attend either of the courses at FAVG will tell you.
It was some of the most challanging and satisfying flying most had ever done.
All run and organised to the highest level, despite the claims from up on the reef.
I'm sure these could be run again if enough interest were shown.
PS Mr Lush, It's Chris Heames. Back of the class (or formation) for you mate !!!!
